Despite the historic struggles of the U.S. housing market, landlords are having an increasingly difficult time finding tenants. In the U.S. News and World Report article, “Apartment Vacancy Rate Set to Break Record” is it reported that the national vacancy rate hit 7.8% in 2009, the highest level since 1986. It can be expected that the rates from Q4 2009 and Q1 2010 will break all-time highs due to the colder months being traditionally low in rental demand.
According to the Associated Press, the nation’s nursing homes are close to laying off workers, cutting services and even closing due to a perfect storm from the recession and deep federal and state government spending cuts. With Medicare adjustments and the new Health Care Bill slashing upwards of $16 billion in nursing home funding over the next 10 years, the industry is headed for a crisis.
